Carv's Thinky Blog I'm an author with a focus on satirical science fiction.

Villanelle

(P.S.: I'm proud of this one simply because it's such a restrictively difficult form to compose. It was written for an old flame in April 2001.)

"And the book says, 'We may be through with the past,
but the past ain’t through with us.'"—P. T. Anderson, Magnolia

"Surrender not, my love, to fate's design,"
He whispered, though the fracture had begun.
"Take heart, for our two worlds may yet align."

“If you lack strength, I freely offer mine;
“So walk with me, though reflex bids you run.
“Surrender not, my love, to fate’s design.”

He held her face, their fingers intertwined;
And so two silhouettes became as one.
“Take heart, for our two worlds may yet align.”

She drank him in; their bodies flowed as wine.
Would passion dissipate come morning sun?
“Surrender not, my love, to fate’s design.”

Those hopeful words would echo in her mind,
Though years would pass ere all was said and done:
“Take heart, for our two worlds may yet align.”

To err is human, to forgive divine,
Yet best is when the hurt by time’s undone.
Surrender not, my love, to fate’s design;
Take heart, for our two worlds may yet align.
